TW: RAPE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Honestly, I always feel like white people can’t shock me anymore by the depths to which they sink in order rationalize their racism but they still always manage. Always. Without fail. Endlessly.

ROMAN POLANSKI HAS AN OSCAR

MARK WAHLBERG HAS TWO OSCAR NOMINATIONS

SEAN PENN HAS AN OSCAR

JOSH BROLIN HAS AN OSCAR NOMINATION

So no, unless you’re a black man, the academy and the rest of the entire fucking world doesn’t give a fuck if you beat or rape a woman or girl. And this is really fucking rich coming from a guy who raped Anna Faris on screen for a joke. But he’s white so it’s ok. And hilarious.

This fucking commentary. Don’t even get me started on how fucked up the Oscars are in terms of rewarding men who rape and beat women.

The Oscars don’t give awards for beating and raping women; they give out awards for movies.

And, yes, I understand the moral concern, here. When a person who commits bad actions makes something that we buy and then award, we do support them on some level. This is true, and I understand how many think that that means we support their actions, but we don’t. When I buy a movie ticket, I’m supporting the art and nothing else. I am saying, with my dollar, that I think that this movie is worth it, not that I think abuse is ok.

I think what people fail to understand is that people can’t be reduced like that. When someone abuses someone, that doesn’t mean they can’t turn around and make a perfect, beautiful work of art. There’s no such thing as an abuser, just someone who abuses. What does that distinction mean? Well, it means that people’s actions do not define them. As humans, we are capable of beautiful and terrible things. We make good decisions, and we make deplorable decisions. And I have no problem if you want to hate someone for their actions, if you want some goddamn retribution, if you want to prevent rape and abuse from happening in the future. But that has little to do with a movie award show.

When you get an Oscar, it’s not for “Best Rape” or “Best Domestic Assault.” It’s for “Best Actor/Actress.” It’s for “Best Director.” It’s for “Best Film.”

Can you be an asshole and make a perfect movie?

Do your crimes take away from the beauty of a perfect movie?

Does your movie take away from the severity of your crimes?

Can I like a man’s art but hate the man?

Roman Polanski deserves his Oscar for the Direction of the Pianist just as much as he deserves to serve jail time for his crime.

Mark Whalberg deserves his nomination (I could only find one for The Departed) just as much as he deserved his jail time (I would like to add that he did serve time, though not as much as he was sentenced to. Since then he has kept away from his life of crime, has started charity work, and has expressed nothing but complete regret for his past actions, for which he takes full responsibility. This is a man rehabilitated. This is a man who has changed his ways. Isn’t this what we want? Shouldn’t we encourage changes like this? Shouldn’t we raise him up as a symbol for other assholes? If not, then is it any wonder why repeat offenses are so high if we can’t let people try to get away from their past?)

Sean Penn deserves his awards (Mystic River and Milk) just as much as he deserves to be reprimanded for his assault crimes (though, again, he has served jail time and paid fines. He hasn’t shown the remorse of Whalberg, but he has been punished by society, to some extent. Maybe not enough.)

Josh Brolin deserves his nomination for Milk just as much as he deserves punishment for his crimes (Again, was charged and punished. In fact, the only person on this list who has gotten off scott free [if you could call living abroad in exile getting off scott free] is Polanski. Again, maybe they haven’t served enough time to your liking, but don’t make it sound like the judge slapped them on their wrist and nothing else)
